Hoeveel talen spreken wij?

Wij mensen spreken ruim 6000 talen, heb ik steeds gedacht, op grond van krantenberichten die weer andere bronnen aanhaalden. Maar de enige bron van dat getal blijkt onbetrouwbaar, volgens een artikel (pdf) van Berthold van Maris voor Onze taal. Ethnologue telde in 1988 en 2010. Wat blijkt: ondanks alle berichten over 'uitstervende talen', zie bijvoorbeeld hier, zijn er tussen 1988 en 2010 een kleine duizend bijgekomen! Telde Ethnologue er in 1988 nog zo'n 6000, waarvan drie in Nederland (Fries, Nederlands en Nederlandse gebarentaal), in 2010 zouden het er bijna 7000 zijn, waarvan een dertiental in Nederland: Achterhoeks, Drents, Nederlands, Fries, Gronings, Limburgs, Nederlandse Gebarentaal, Sallands, Stellingwerfs, Twents, Veluws, Vlaams en Zeeuws.
Volgens Van Maris ligt dat aan de doelstelling van de organisatie achter Ethnologue: SIL International. Hij vat samen wat volgens mij uit de doelstelling van SIL inderdaad valt af te leiden: het doel is de Bijbel in zoveel mogelijk talen te vertalen. Al dikt Van Maris dit nog aan door te veronderstellen dat de SIL-lers denken dat als dit doel bereikt is, de Dag des Oordeels aanbreekt. Dat vind ik niet terug, maar ik heb ook geen geduld om de hele website van SIL na te vlooien. Ik citeer alleen dit uit die website:

Dat mag zo zijn, volgens Van Marwijk is ' SIL International nauw gelieerd aan het al even christelijke Wycliffe Bible Translators, een instituut dat overal in de wereld bijbelvertalingen produceert, ' maar waarvan ik de vermelding niet terugvind in de SIL-website.
Nu is er, zoals Berthold van Maris ook al vermeldt, geen sluitende definitie van taal. Men zegt wel: een taal is een dialect met een vlag en een leger. De The World Atlas of Language Structures schijnt tot veel minder te komen, en de database van Matthew Dryer komt tot rond 2000 talen.
