Dat is jammer, want de IBBY is heus een aardige vereniging, waarin mensen hun uiterste best doen om het kinderboek de aandacht te geven die het verdient.
Ik citeer de doelstelling weer eens:
' Mission
- to promote international understanding through children's books
- to give children everywhere the opportunity to have access to books with high literary and artistic standards
- to encourage the publication and distribution of quality children's books, especially in developing countries
- to provide support and training for those involved with children and children's literature
- to stimulate research and scholarly works in the field of children's literature
- to protect and uphold the Rights of the Child according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. '
Wie kan daar nu tegen zijn... Recep Erdogan misschien?
Tot de activiteiten van IBBY hoort het organiseren van een internationaal congres, elke twee jaar. Dat vond tot nu toe plaats op de meest uiteenlopende plaatsen, zie hier. Merendeels heel rustige plekken, maar toch ook iets minder rustige plekken als Mexico City (2014), Macau (2006), Cartagena de Indias (2002), New Delhi (1998), Berlijn drie jaar na de val van de Muur (1992), Nicosia (1984) en Rio de Janeiro (1974).
In 2018 zou het congres in Istanbul zijn. Maar dat gaat niet door. Dat maakte IBBY-voorzitter Wally De Docker bekend tijdens de Internationale Kinderboekenbeurs in Bologna. Dit is het officiële bericht:
Our world is in turmoil. At the start of the 2017 Bologna Children's Books Fair press conference I talked about promoting international understanding and the current tendency of building walls in order to separate nations from one another. We are now confronted by a situation that affects IBBY directly. Our colleagues in Turkey are dealing with a situation in their country that is beyond their control.
However, IBBY needs to react to world events, we are not immune.
So, with a really heavy heart as IBBY president I have to announce that the 2018 IBBY Congress that was scheduled to happen in Istanbul next September has been cancelled.
I want to sincerely thank our IBBY members in Turkey for their dedication, perseverance and good will. They have been preparing for this event for the last 4 years.
IBBY has a two-year cycle and therefore the IBBY network of members still needs to meet in 2018. The IBBY Executive Committee is looking into various feasible alternatives and we hope to announce a solution by the end of April this year.

Ja, Recep Erdogan eigent zich heel wat macht toe. Turkije is nog net geen dictatuur. Toch verbaasde het me te horen dat deze conferentie is afgelast.
Op 7 mei hoorde ik van een bestuurslid van IBBY Nederland dat de organisatie de 'veiligheid van de deelnemers niet zou kunnen garanderen'.
Tja. Wat moet ik me daar nou bij voorstellen. Niemands veiligheid is ooit gegarandeerd. Vliegtuigongelukken, aanrijdingen, berovingen, vervelende ziektes... het is allemaal niet echt te voorkomen, hooguit een beetje te vermijden.
Eigenlijk kan ik mij niet voorstellen dat er ook maar een deelnemer uit de kinderboekenwereld ongewenst zou zijn in de ogen van het Turkse bewind - behalve wellicht een afvaardiging uit Armenië - wat overigens wat mij betreft reden genoeg zou zijn voor afgelasting. Het riekt een beetje naar een angstig IBBY-bestuur - óf naar informatie die beter niet in de openbaarheid gebracht kon worden volgens dat bestuur ('situation in their country that is beyond their control').
Een merkwaardige beslissing.
